As many of you know, the San Diego yachting community is a tight-knit family. We are fortunate to live in a place of incredible beauty and abundance, but as we approach the season of gratitude, I want us to remember those in our city who are struggling.
With the current government shutdown stretching on, the need in our community is becoming critical. Many federal workers are facing uncertainty as paychecks are delayed, and crucial programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/food stamps) are under threat right before the Thanksgiving holiday. This, combined with the normal seasonal increase in demand, puts immense pressure on our local charities.
I’m reaching out to my friends, family, and valued clients—those of us with so much to be thankful for—to dedicate a portion of our time and resources to help our neighbors. Let’s make this Thanksgiving a compassionate one.
Giving Thanks with Canned Goods: Where to Donate Food
Non-perishable food items, especially proteins, are immediately needed to fill the pantries for the holidays. When donating, please aim for nutrient-rich items that are easy to open.
San Diego Food Bank
- Most-Needed Items: Canned Meats (Tuna/Chicken), Dry/Canned Beans, Cereal, Rice, Peanut Butter, Canned Fruit & Vegetables.
- Drop-Off Info: Accepts non-perishable food at its Miramar warehouse during specific hours. (Always check their website for the most current donation times).
Feeding San Diego
- Focus: Works through various programs and partners to distribute food across the county.
- Drop-Off Info: Check their website for local food drives or partner drop-off locations near you.
The Salvation Army
- Most-Needed Items: Canned goods and pasta are accepted.
- Drop-Off Info: Drop-offs often accepted at their local San Diego Citadel Corps or charity shops. Check the San Diego regional website for locations.
Local Shelters (Alpha Project, Brother Benno’s)
- Focus: Non-perishable items are always needed.
- Action: CALL AHEAD. Shelters’ needs and drop-off logistics change constantly, so confirm their most-needed items before visiting.

(Our Yachting Community’s Tradition of Kindness)
The Food Drive has truly blossomed into a worthy ritual of kindness within our yachting community. It’s expected to be the largest yet, and we urge everyone to participate!
- What to Bring: Please bring five (5) cans of food so we can continue to help provide for our neighbors in need.
- When: December 17th, 2025.
- Drop-Off: You can drop your cans off at SWYC anytime on the day of the event.
Sharing the Warmth: Donating Coats & Warm Clothing
As the temperatures drop, warm clothing becomes a life-saving necessity for those experiencing homelessness and for families stretched thin by economic hardship.
The Salvation Army
- Donation Guidelines: Accepts clean, gently used coats and clothing at their thrift stores. Find a location on their website.
Brother Benno’s
- Donation Guidelines: Provides clothing to the homeless. They have designated donation drop-off points for clothes. Visit their website for details.
Alpha Project for the Homeless
- Donation Guidelines: Historically accepts clothing donations, including warm coats. Please contact them directly to confirm their current needs and drop-off procedure.
Other Local Charities
