When I first co-founded AGL Yacht Sales, the name wasn’t just a business title; it was a tribute to family April, Gina, and Leilani. It was a promise to lead with soul, prioritize people over transactions, and help every dreamer find their “right fit” on the water.

Whether we’ve spent hours together walking through the teak decks of a Jeanneau, navigating the complexities of a closing, or simply sharing stories about the San Diego sunset at Sunroad Marina, you know that for me, boating has always been about the community.

But as many of you know, being a woman and a minority owner in this industry hasn’t always been smooth sailing. I’ve seen the “glass ceilings” and the “old guard” mentalities firsthand. While I love the salt and the spray of our world, I’ve often felt there was a missing conversation—a need to spotlight the grit and the brilliance of the women who keep our waterfronts running.

That is why I am so excited to share my latest project with you: The Women of the Waterfront Podcast.

In 2019, a simple lunch between three colleagues—Leilani Wales, Dean West, and Peter Zaleski—sparked a conversation that would change the face of the California Yacht Brokers Association (CYBA). They asked a fundamental question: How can we make our industry more inclusive, more connected, and more reflective of the diverse community that loves the water?

The answer was GEO: Growth, Expansion, and Outreach.

Now led by Chairwoman Leilani Wales, GEO has evolved from a lunch-table concept into a driving force for community and recognition within the maritime world.

More Than Just Brokers: A Mission of Inclusion

The vision for GEO was clear from the start: open the doors. While the CYBA is rooted in brokerage, the industry is powered by a massive ecosystem of professionals. GEO was designed to build bridges for everyone—from divers and mechanics to surveyors and administrative pros.

The GEO mission focuses on three pillars:

  • Growth: Increasing diversity and welcoming new members to the CYBA.
  • Expansion: Reaching out to women, youth, and minorities to showcase careers in recreational boating.
  • Engagement: Connecting with local communities through education, mentorship, and charity.

Building Camaraderie: The Marine Industry MeetUp

One of GEO’s first wins was the Marine Industry MeetUp. These quarterly gatherings, held at local restaurants, were designed to strip away the formality of “the office” and replace it with genuine connection.

“Sometimes we don’t know who’s on the other end of the phone,” says Leilani. “These MeetUps created real relationships—and that energy was contagious.” By putting faces to names, GEO helped turn a fast-paced industry into a tight-knit neighborhood.

Honoring the “Women of the Waterfront”

Perhaps the most impactful initiative to emerge from GEO is the Women of the Waterfront Award. For too long, the women keeping the industry afloat—whether in the engine room, the front office, or the boardroom—went under-recognized.

This award changes the narrative. It honors women who exemplify leadership, integrity, and a commitment to the boating community.

  • 2023 – Bernadine Trusso (Dona Jenkins Maritime Documentation Service): Recognized for her unwavering integrity and precision in vessel documentation.1
  • 2024 – Kathy Ford (Reliable Documentation): Honored for her mentorship and her status as a standard-bearer for excellence in maritime service.

Diversity by the Numbers: The Changing Tide

The mission of GEO is more vital than ever when looking at the broader landscape of the industry. Historically, the maritime and recreational boating sectors have seen significant demographic gaps, but the tide is beginning to turn.

  • Women in Boating: According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), women now make up approximately 19% to 20% of boat owners, a number that has been steadily climbing.
  • Industry Leadership: While women hold roughly 15% of leadership roles in the broader maritime sector globally, initiatives like the Women of the Waterfront are designed to increase that visibility and encourage more women to enter the “C-suite” of the docks.
  • Economic Impact: Minority boat ownership is also on the rise. Research indicates that Hispanic and African American participation in boating has seen growth rates of nearly 10-15% in recent years as outreach programs expand.

Looking Toward the Horizon

GEO isn’t slowing down. Under Leilani’s leadership, the organization is currently working to strengthen its digital presence, ensuring the stories of female pioneers and industry leaders are preserved and shared to inspire the next generation.

As Leilani puts it: “Together, we are stronger—and through GEO, our waters are wide open for everyone.”
